Mercedes-AMG GT has been spotted testing in numerous guises over the past year, and has recently been previewed with multiple images and video showing off the car’s design, engine and interior. Now, the Mercedes SLS’s  successor is all set to launch later tonight at an event at Affalterbach, Germany.

Ahead of its planned public debut at the Paris motor show next month, Mercedes will pull the wraps of its new Mercedes-AMG GT later this evening. Mercedes is said to have set performance targets designed to beat the 911 Turbo’s 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds, as well as its 195mph top speed.

The GT features a new twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine with 503bhp and 479lb ft of torque. That same engine will also appear in the upcoming C63 AMG, and shares its architecture with the 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder unit found in the A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG. It will also feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, mounted to the rear axle assembly, as well as a mechanical locking differential.

Highlight of the new car is its low weight, with its predominantly aluminium structure allowing Mercedes to dropped the car’s kerb weight below that of the SLS, to around 1550kg. Some of the new car’s components are said to be shared with the older SLS, the new systems including the same electro-mechanical steering setup as the new C-class.

When the GT goes on sale later this year it’s expected to carry a price tag of around £100,000. The car will be assembled on the same production line used for the SLS, at AMG’s HQ in Affalterbach, Germany.
